Brian J. Kakuk
ExplorerCave SpecialistRebreather SpecialistBrian Kakuk is a former US Navy diver with more than 35 years of professional diving behind him, and he owns Bahamas Underground in Marsh Harbour on Abaco — not a Florida operation, though his certifications are filed here. He is the explorer of the Abaco crystal caves, including Ralph's Cave and its Glass Factory, among the most delicately decorated underwater caves anywhere, and much of the line in them is his. He also founded the Bahamas Caves Research Foundation, and works as a photographer and filmmaker. His 44 IANTD ratings cover cave, mine and wreck, no-mount and sidemount, and seven rebreather units to trimix level.

Kakuk is the person the forums point to for the Bahamian caves, and has been for close to twenty years — a 2006 poster describes completing cavern, intro and full cave with him at Bahamas Underground, and the recommendations have not let up since. The recurring note is that training with him is inseparable from where he trains: "Diving in Abaco with Brian Kakuk made all the years and dollars and dives elsewhere worth it", and a diver certified sidemount there called it an honour to have him as instructor and guide into Crystal Cave. He explored much of what he teaches in — one thread notes that to dive a particular cave seriously you pay to bring Brian over from Abaco, because he found it. Divers also use him for post-course practical work after classroom training elsewhere, and he currently dives a Flex CCR.
