John Chatterton
John Chatterton is among the best-known wreck divers in the world, principally for the six-year investigation that identified a U-boat lying off New Jersey as U-869 — an effort that cost three divers their lives and became Robert Kurson's book Shadow Divers. He has dived the Andrea Doria extensively, co-hosted 57 episodes of Deep Sea Detectives, and came to diving through commercial work. He teaches TDI technical courses out of Dive Educators on Florida's west coast, from intro to tech through advanced wreck, extended range and advanced trimix.

Chatterton is among the best-known wreck divers in the world, principally for the six-year investigation that identified a U-boat off New Jersey as U-869 — an effort that cost three divers their lives and became Robert Kurson's Shadow Divers. He has dived the Andrea Doria extensively, co-hosted 57 episodes of Deep Sea Detectives, and came to diving through commercial work. He teaches TDI out of Dive Educators in Florida. His teaching is worth describing separately from his fame. ScubaBoard students report completing his Advanced Wreck course as a team of three and describe him reshaping how they thought about technical diving during a trimix class — "how John Chatterton re-re-shaped my perspective of technical diving in my Trimix class" is one poster's phrasing. Others post about booking AN/DP and Advanced Wreck with him months ahead. When ScubaBoard lists who to train with by specialism, he is the name given for wreck, in the same way Andy Davis and Steve Martin are given for sidemount. For someone this well known, surprisingly few students have written about his courses online, so ask for references.
