Known in the forums as Bill "Bird" Oestreich, he teaches TDI, NSS-CDS and IANTD out of Bird's Underwater in Crystal River, on Florida's west coast. He is one of the three names High Springs locals hand out together — "Ken Sallot, Bill Oestreich, and Joe Bosquez" appears almost verbatim in more than one thread, from different posters, years apart — and he shows up whenever the question narrows to something specific: a cave DPV instructor near Cape Coral, a cave course in Florida, the route from sidemount through cavern and intro to full cave. He predominantly dives and teaches backmount, and is explicitly listed among instructors who do not require sidemount. One r/CaveDiving account gives the shape of the training: two days cavern, two days intro, and on through full cave. Bird's Underwater is better known for manatee snorkelling in Crystal River, so the shop's reviews are mostly about manatees; his reputation as a cave instructor comes from the forums.
