Alvarez founded Acuatic Tulum in 1993, among the first dive shops in Tulum, and has been diving and mapping the Quintana Roo cenotes since. He is an underwater cartographer and archaeological explorer as much as an instructor, and has been a GUE Fundamentals instructor since 2018. The reviews that reach back furthest are the useful ones: divers who have returned to Acuatic Tulum since 2002 and describe cave training for their children by Alvarez himself, with guided cavern and reef diving handled by Alex junior — a second generation now working in the shop. That kind of continuity across two decades says as much as a course report would. Most of the shop's reviews are about recreational cenote and reef diving, and his exploration and survey work produces papers and maps rather than student reviews, so ask for references from recent cave students.
